Monday's Musings

WooHoo!  These socks are finally finished!  I'm not sure why they seemed to take so long, maybe because I worked on other things while working on them, maybe because they are guy socks.... bigger than my socks (hard to do with my size 11!)....does switching from knit to purl all the time slow you down like it does me?

Pattern:  Retro Rib Socks (from Favorite Socks)
Size: Men's 11
Yarn:  Knitpicks Essential in Dusk (2 balls)
Needles: US 2 dpn
Modifications:  None (no major mistakes that I know of either!)

My DH (dear husband) wishes these were for him....he REALLY liked this pattern, so I will be doing up another pair of these asap, especially since I've never made him socks (YIKES!) okay, not that I haven't tried...but guy yarn, guy pattern, DH's taste....not so easy for me!

My story:

So let's see where were we? You know the back story.  You know it will take a while for everything to unfold.  Now you want to know what happened eight year ago.  Am I right?  So on July 10th, 2000 I thought everything was fine.  I seemed perfectly healthy.  Then my right arm started doing weird things....it would randomly go really numb (almost like it was falling asleep, but worse)  Every time it happened, we prayed!  But it kept happening!   After much convincing, my mom persuaded me to stay home from work ( I hate missing work/school/etc)  Before it was time for my doctor's appointment, I was in the ER after having a grand mal seizure!  There was much to PRAISE God for in this!

1) My nine year old brother was at the park (1st time on his own) so he didn't witness this!
2) It happened it a place where I couldn't hurt anyone (ie-not driving!)
3) I didn't hurt myself (Yeah for being in the middle of the living room floor)
4) My mom was close by to take care of me (Thanks Mom!)

God was in control and taking care of me, but what was the cause...off to do a million medical tests! (more later)

Now remember the contest is still on, so go ahead and leave a comment! (it isn't hard)  Please make sure that there is a way I can contact you if you win!!!

  1. Somehow seeing your story is writing has caused me unexpected emotions. I've know for a long time that I should write down these events from my perspective and I guess I'll finally do it. God is so gracious and good to us to bring us through with such a glorious end but then that's how He operates!
    By the way,beautiful socks!

  2. Wow - really makes people question whether they should ignore symptoms! How is your health currently?

    The socks look great....

  3. Great looking socks! Wasn't there a lot of knitting through the back loops in that pattern? That slows me down all the time, because I have to think carefully and not accidentally knit the stitch in the normal way.

  4. Pretty socks! - but in answer to your question.... yes, purling for me is like putting on the brakes. I pretty much pick any pattern by how much purling is involved :o(

  5. Great socks!! I need to knit DH some too but I've been afraid because of the big feet and the boyish colored yarn and boring guy pattern. :) Thanks for continuing your story. Praise God the seizure happened the way it did. Isn't it good to recount what God has done in our lives. It helps us remember how good He is and how He takes care of us.

  7. Leah, keep the story coming.

I haven't gone to a LYS I recently discovered to knit with others yet either, a little nervous, like you. Bu hopefully after all this medical stuff I can be a regular attendee. I am looking forward to it.

God sure is good, all the time. Donthing happend without His divine approval. I can;t wait to hear the rest of your testamony.

  8. Lovely socks! I have been thinking about making a pair of those for my husband's giant feet. I am still debating his worthiness for hand knit socks since he thinks I am silly for liking them myself. He is very good about not commenting on my yarn accumulation so that weighs in his favor.

  9. It seems odd to say "Those are beautiful socks ~ well done!" in the middle of an amazing story like this one!

  10. I'm not a big fan of purling but love the socks enough that I may have to try that pattern.

I'm glad you werent alone when the seizure happened. Looking forward to the rest of the story!

  13. oh my!

I sympathize with your socks. My hubby has size 14 and it seems like I get to knit the foot forever.

  14. I love those socks! Switching between knitting and purling doesn't slow me down any more than purling in general, but purling is definitely slower than knitting.

  16. Wonderful socks! Poor DH lol!

A seizure? Wow, I'm glad the lord saved you from that close call. And Thank God for Mothers!

I don't have much trouble going from knit to purl. But, doing intarsia or cable/patterns I can some times get uber confused.

  17. Those socks are awesome! They are beautiful!

It is a wonder how things happened - your brother not being present but your mom beign present - and the seizure happening in a 'controlled' environment.

  18. Nice...it reminds me of the Garter & Knit pattern I saw somwhere. I definately want to makes somethign like it but I have all striped sock yarn or no solid colors and there are just some patterns I think look better in solids...My Rav Queue is filled with them, Hence the reason I'm still knitting basic socks (St sts all the way)

  19. The socks are really nice! It's amazing to see how everything works out. Especially with your brother not being home and your not being at work! Your story is inspiring.

  20. Good pictures of the socks! It's too bad that there's no way to transfer the wonderful squishy-ness through the computer. ;)
